Classes
The classes focus on pregnancy and parenting through each stage of baby’s life. All program's listed above include access to these classes for the young woman, the birth father, and their families.
Changes are happening in your body and it’s helpful to know that what you are experiencing should be expected during pregnancy. It’s also helpful to know what changes are going to happen next! Understanding the body during pregnancy helps to eliminate stress and unnecessary worry!
While going through the pregnancy, there is a lot to think about, but you must also think about what your parenting skills will be. How will you handle the situation if the baby will not stop crying for long periods of time? What type of discipline will you use when the baby gets older? What is your personality type and how do you deal with stress and anxiety? This class helps you to think about the parenting skills you were brought up with and how your parenting skills will be the same or different.
Emergencies come up, from infants to adults, and having First Aid & CPR knowledge can help to take care of a problem, reduce further complications, or save a life. This class talks about, and practices, bandaging a wound, helping an infant or adult who is choking, performing breathing and CPR techniques using an infant and adult manikin, plus much more! After successfully completing the class, you will be American Heart Association CPR & First Aid certified to help someone.
In order to bring home the baby, there must be a plan in place and items to carry out every-day tasks for the baby ~ this class will help you to think about bringing the baby home from the hospital and what you will need. Will you use cloth or disposable diapers? .. How do you change a baby and bathe a baby? .. Will you breastfeed the baby or use bottles? .. How much time will it take to care for the baby each day and night? .. These are just some of the things that this class will help you to think about and plan for.
Knowing what to expect during labor and delivery is important so that you can be mentally and physically prepared. Being aware of the stages of labor help you to know when to expect delivery of the baby. Knowing the options about choices you may have to make can help you to be ready to make those decisions.
Working with our Counselor on staff will help you through pregnancy and parenting, while working on things to be a good mom and possibly working with the birth father and family members. The Counselor will help you to look at Decision-Making … How and Why you make your decisions. She will also help you to understand The Me I See .. which helps you to acknowledge how you see yourself and how you think others see you. Another topic will be the choice of parenting or placing for adoption ~ BUT we will never try to sway your decision about this .. this is YOUR decision, and it is our responsibility to talk with all the young women in our programs about what those options are. Talking to our Counselor allows you to ask questions and talk about relationships with others. We work towards Family Reunification where the goal is to reunite a young woman with family when a healthy environment can be provided and it’s good for both, otherwise we work towards Independent Living for the young woman and baby. Our Counselor is also available to work with the Father of the baby and any family members.
